JH&S Committees have a primary responsibility to identify hazards and bring them to the attention of the employer. Level 1 Basic Certification provides an overall knowledge of health and safety that applies to all workplaces. Part 1 is spread over the course of 3 days and Part 2 is spread over the course of 2 days. A green OHSA is provided.
Part 1 Topics:
Occupational health and safety law;
Rights, duties and responsibilities;
Hazard recognition, assessment and control
Evaluation of hazard controls
Joint Health & Safety Committees’ duties
Responsibilities of JHSC members and certified members
Health and Safety Resources
Part 2 Topics:
Training on a minimum of 6 hazards relevant to the workplace of the attendee
Training focuses on RACEmethodology (Recognition, Assessment and Control of hazards, and Evaluation of the hazard controls)
Other topics that are relevant to the workplace of the attendee, Part 2 courses are discussed with attendees in the Part 1 Training
1 to 5 employees – You are not required to have a JHSC or health and safety representative unless a designated substance regulation applies to your workplace.
6 to 19 employees – You are required to have one health and safety representative who is selected by the workers they represent. If a designated substance applies to your workplace, you are required to have a JHSC.
20 – 49 employees – You are required to have a JHSC. The committee must have at least 2 members.
50+ employees – You are required to have a JHSC. The committee must have at least 4 members.
